How to Get to Doge's Palace

Getting to Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale) in Venice is straightforward once you reach St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco). The palace is at San Marco 1, right beside St Mark’s Basilica and facing the Venetian Lagoon.

By public transportation, you’ll use the vaporetto (water bus). The most convenient stops are San Zaccaria (closest) and San Marco Vallaresso. From Santa Lucia Station or Piazzale Roma, take a Grand Canal route like Line 1 for the scenic ride, or Line 2 for a faster trip, then walk a few minutes to the palace. Just follow signs for “San Marco” once you get off.

Walking is part of the Venice experience. From Rialto Bridge, it’s about 10–15 minutes through narrow calli and small squares. From Accademia Bridge, allow around 15–20 minutes. The easiest rule: follow the yellow street signs pointing to Piazza San Marco.

Driving: you can’t drive into historic Venice, so park at Piazzale Roma (closest) or Tronchetto, then continue by vaporetto to the San Marco area. If you arrive via Mestre, you can also take a train into Santa Lucia and switch to the water bus.

How to get to Doge's Palace by public transportation?
  • If you’re thinking about metro, Venice has no metro to Doge’s Palace. Take a train to Venezia Santa Lucia or arrive at Piazzale Roma, then use vaporetto to San Marco/San Zaccaria and walk a few minutes to the palace.
  • To go by bus, Take a bus to Piazzale Roma (Venice bus terminal), then hop on a vaporetto to San Marco Vallaresso or San Zaccaria. From the stop, follow signs to Piazza San Marco and Doge’s Palace.
  • If you want to go by tram, Tram lines run in Mestre to Piazzale Roma, not to San Marco. Take the tram to Piazzale Roma, then continue by vaporetto to the San Marco area and walk a few minutes to Doge’s Palace.
  • Cycling isn’t practical in historic Venice. You can bike to Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, park there, then continue by vaporetto to San Marco/San Zaccaria and walk to Doge’s Palace.
  • Walk to Piazza San Marco, then Doge’s Palace is right beside St Mark’s Basilica. From Rialto Bridge it’s about 10–15 min; from Accademia Bridge around 15–20 min, following “San Marco” signs.
  • You can’t drive into central Venice. Drive to Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, park, then take a vaporetto to San Marco/San Zaccaria and walk a few minutes to Doge’s Palace.
  • Park at Piazzale Roma garages (closest) or Tronchetto parking. Then take a vaporetto to San Marco Vallaresso or San Zaccaria and walk to Piazza San Marco and Doge’s Palace.
  • But it is advised to avoid driving: cars can’t enter historic Venice, parking at Piazzale Roma/Tronchetto is limited and pricey, and you’ll still need a vaporetto + walk to San Marco—train + vaporetto is usually easier.

Best itinerary including a visit to Doge's Palace

Start your day early in Piazza San Marco with a timed Tiqets entry to Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale). Arrive 15–20 minutes before your slot to breeze through checks and enjoy the courtyards before the square gets crowded. Begin inside with the grand “power rooms”: the Golden Staircase, the lavish Doge’s Apartments, and the vast Great Council Chamber—take time to look up at the ceilings and scan the monumental paintings (this is where Venice shows off).

Next, head for the iconic Bridge of Sighs and the historic prisons. Doing this mid-visit is ideal: you’ve already built context, and the flow feels more dramatic as you cross from glittering halls into the darker side of the republic’s justice system. Plan about 2 hours total in the palace if you like reading room notes and stopping for photos.

Late morning, step outside and keep it “San Marco tight”: admire the façade of St Mark’s Basilica, then grab a quick espresso away from the busiest arcades. After lunch, walk the waterfront by the Venetian Lagoon toward the Riva degli Schiavoni for breezy views, then drift back through side streets toward Rialto Bridge for a classic Venice stroll.

If your Tiqets option includes the nearby Museo Correr, the Archaeological Museum, or the Marciana Library, save them for late afternoon when the palace crowds peak. Finish at sunset with photos from the lagoon-facing edge of St Mark’s Square.
